Rochester First: Relationships evolve through song

By Mark Gruba

Blackfriars Theatre will present Ordinary Days February 1-17 in Rochester.

Megan Colombo, the Marketing and Outreach Coordinator for Blackfriars Theatre, and Hector Manuel, who plays Warren in the production, discussed the show Tuesday during News 8 at Noon.

Ordinary Days is a beautiful show, a very intimate show in a super intimate space,” said Colombo. “It follows the story of four young New Yorkers – two a couple in their 30s and then two unlikely friends who meet each other at The Metropolitan Museum in New York – and it just kind of follows their paths to fufillment, love, happiness, Starbucks – really lots of different places, so it’s a beautiful, beautiful show.”

Manuel described Warren as the optimist in the group. “He is trying to bring that positivity that all New Yorkers need, and don’t really know that they need until they find him. But he too is a 20-something going through his own stuff, so he’s trying to find his way, along like everybody else, just trying to do it in a different way through other people, not just so much singular.”

Audiences will find something to connect to in these characters. “They’re all so broadly different, so I think there’s really a character that somebody can identify with really quickly,” Manuel said. “It’s really cool to see everybody else interact with each other too because they are so different their interactions are really cool to watch.”

Ordinary Days creates an intimate theatre experience. “It’s completely sung through,” noted Colombo. “There’s no dialogue. There’s no speaking to each other really at all. Everything is song, so it’s just a single piano on stage and these four characters – so a super intimate house and everything is right in your face. It’s wonderful!”

The characters will take you on an 80 minutes journey with no intermission. For tickets to Ordinary Days dial (585) 454-1260 or visit Blackfriars.org.
